Recent short fiction by women writers (1) has had to contend for attention with quite a flurry of books by and about Mansfield, our primary standard for literary evaluations. (2) Temptations to make connections are strong. An attempt to connect new writers with Mansfield through form would be doomed, since her control is so formidable. But a possible connection through content beckons. In particular, I would ask the question, How far has the potential female hero got since Mansfield? I use the term 'female hero' after writers such as Pearson and Pope, (3) who make the vital distinction between 'heroine', a passive character waiting for a male hero to complete her and set her free; and 'female hero', someone who is active and has her own dragons to kill. This she does during her quest, 'a psychological journey in which the hero escapes from the captivity of her conditioning and searches for her true self' (p. 63). Pearson and Pope identify four restricting myths, or dragons to be overcome:
